The Mission of the Marian Anderson Historical SocietyFounder, Marian Anderson Historical Society

The Marian Anderson Historical Society would like to continue Marian Anderson's legacy by assisting and mentoring vocal classical artists in their professional careers. MAHS has provided financial sources for auditions, performances, wardrobe and competitions and would like to accumulate and distribute to scholars a directory that includes booking agents, managers, and classical producers. The Society would also like to produce its own concert series by establishing a Philadelphia base Marian Anderson Scholars Concert showcasing the Marian Anderson Scholars.

Additionally, the organization would like to restore the 19th century properties; Marian Anderson Birthplace and the Marian Anderson Residence to their original magnificence and glamour to attract more worldwide tourism. The restoration and renovation of the Marian Anderson birthplace will improve the appearance of a traditional city neighborhood (currently in transition) and will add another site to the future "Marian Anderson Village".

The "Village" is composed of the birthplace, residence, home church, elementary school, and recreational center. The birthplace will provide additional space for MAHS programming and memorabilia- The Marian Anderson properties are currently listed on the Philadelphia Independence Visitors Center registry. Responses from visitors and students have been overwhelmingly positive and serve to enhance and educate the fundamental mission of the Society. The Marian Anderson residence and birthplace will become a larger global outreach program where traditional, historical and neighborhood legacies can converge.

The global outreach program will include the Marian Anderson Educational Pavilion designed to educate and produce an audio/visual interactive tour of the Marian Anderson Heritage Village. Architectural specifications have been documented to project the Society's vision.
